Big Updates for Flash (Player and IDE)

For the Player, look no further than support for H.264.

For the IDE, check out the update beta for Flash CS3 which will allow you to export and test in AIR without need of the command line.

  1. Its interesting that they would pull such a switcharoo, especially when the video @ onflex showed tinic previewing the full screen hardware acceleration capabilities with flv only a month or so ago… Looks like that codec has a one way trip to the legacy bin. It just wasn’t cutting it I suppose?

Interestingly enough, of the two other major video players, Microsoft is the one that loses most from this news. I bet the Quicktime team is celebrating as I write this, since its is pretty much the de-facto standard for playing H.264 files and there is about to be A LOT more of them on the web now.

  3. H.264 is a great codec– I’m just unbelievably thankful that we won’t have to suffer through embedded quicktime anymore!! *shudder*

  4. Yeah… I betcha the biggest reason why this has happened was because Adobe is releasing their media player. And they are most likely releasing their media player in order to get AIR more popular.

Get a cool product out there that everyone will like.
