flash on. in hd.

By now you’ve all heard that Flash Player 9 Update 3 has been released. We worked with our friends at Adobe to update the Adobe Flash On web site to support brilliant beautiful true HD videos. We all oohed and ahhed over the site the first time we tested a true HD video in it. Hope you enjoy the update!

Note: If you don’t want to upgrade to Flash Player 9 Update 3, feel free to keep your old player and enjoy the site. Standard Def only though. To join all of the big kids at the deep end of the pool you’ll need to upgrade. :)

  1. […] BigSpaceship released a new website celebrating the release of Flash Player 9 Update 3: Adobe Flash On. To fully experience the promo-site it’s advisable to install the latest release, that you can easily access on the upgrade option. […]

  2. Catch 22 - I’m given the upgrade notice, but to upgrade, it says I need to close Firefox. I close Firefox, the installer goes away…sweeeeet.

  3. Touting “true HD” as the benefit of the new Moviestar release is purely marketing speak, in my opinion.

The videos from the Flash On site have been encoded as 480×270 (VP6), 854×480 (VP6) and 1280×720 (H.264), but there’s no reason that the 720p (a.k.a. “HD”) videos couldn’t be encoded using On2’s VP6 codec with comparable quality.

That being said, added support for open (standard) audio and video formats is a massive benefit in itself, so the only complain from me is the misinformation about “HD” :).

  5. It must be me, I didn’t understand the navigation on that site at all. All I get is a tooltip. Anyways, when I close the tab with the site in FireFox I get an error (I run the debug player):

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

  6. Another thing to note, this does not work on Firefox Linux with “Shockwave Flash 9.0 r115″ (as per about:plugins) installed.

  7. @Dinesh: You are required to have at least Flash Player 9.0.47. :)

@pan69: Try clearing your cache. That bug hit the site for a couple of minutes, and we corrected it right away.

@Nathan: We’ll look into the Linux issue. Tested fine for our QA team. As far as “true HD” goes, we’re talking h.264 encoding. We’re talking about Flash adopting and supporting the standard encoding specification of what “HD” is, and that’s exciting. Sorry if that wasn’t totally clarified.

  8. Hi, I don’t want to be anal about this but I really don’t get it. Am I supposed to wait for these thumbs to load or something? Anyway, I still get an error in the debug player. Maybe the site is crashed and thats the reason it doesn’t work?

  12. Absolutely great site. The overall motion was spot on and the audio effects tied it all together. The transition from standard to “hd” quality worked really well.

Can’t wait to get the chance to work on a project with HD video.
